CLUJ MODERN 2022
CLUJ MODERN Contemporary Music Festival, 14th edition (April 2-8, 2022)
Under the title “ENCOUNTERS”, the 14th edition of the biannual Cluj Modern Festival will offer us the opportunity to experience this fundamental human experience, so specific to the imponderable but soul-penetrating art of music. During the magical seven-day period (April 2-8, 2022), “Cluj Modern” will program six selected concert events, including five chamber music concerts/recitals in the Studio Hall of the National Academy of Music “Gheorghe Dima” and a symphonic concert, held in partnership with the “Transilvania” Philharmonic, in the Auditorium Maximum hall of the Babeș-Bolyai University in Cluj Napoca.
The festival aims to remain present and accessible to the public interested in contemporary music, which it presents in a way that seeks to combine aspects of the historical evolution of European and world modernism (the arc of stylistic orientations from the first decades of the twentieth century) with current creation, with pieces in first performance, many of them signed by composers of the younger generation.
The theme of the encounter is present in almost every concert. A real corollary of ideas is the symposium entitled “Inevitable encounters: globalism, cosmopolitanism, acculturation”; the exciting theme of the debate (but also the disappearance of distances in the online environment) brings together voices from Cambridge University, Harvard University, Hong Kong University – along with renowned musicologists from Romania and other countries, including leading figures such as the president and vice-president of the International Musicological Society.
With a rich repertoire and a multi-coloured stylistic palette, with a strong presence of composers and performers from Cluj (Arcadia Quartet, IMPACT XXI, Couleurs, AdHOC ensembles), plus prestigious guests from home and abroad (the AuditivVokal ensemble from Dresden, Spanish conductor Néstor Bayona, violinist Diana Jipa, clarinetist Aurelian Băcan, pianist Ștefan Doniga), the 2022 edition of Cluj Modern reaffirms its special place in the national and international cultural landscape as an event of creativity, modernity, dialogue, invention and collaboration.
